Happy 4th of July

Independence Day falls right in the middle of the week – Wednesday, July 4 – and there is no shortage of places to celebrate this historic date in this history-rich region with patriotic music, parades and fireworks.

If you just can’t wait to celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, head to Chesapeake’s party on July 3. And you can catch fireworks tonight at Norfolk’s Ocean View Beach Park.

July 3

Chesapeake gets a jump on the party with its Celebrate Freedom event at Chesapeake City Park, 900 City Park Drive. Family fun attractions start at 5 p.m., the U.S. Fleet Forces Band performs at 8 , and fireworks start at 9:15. It’s free, except $5 for parking. 757-382-6411, bit.ly/cspkfree.

July 4

Chesapeake South Norfolk Parade and Picnic in the Park. Lakeside Park, 1441 Bainbridge Blvd. Parade starts at 10 a.m., from 1101 Chesapeake Ave. to the park; picnic is 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Free. 757-788-1885, www. southnorfolkcivicleague.com.

Hampton Fourth at the Fort. 20 Ingalls Road, Fort Monroe. A flag ceremony at 10 a.m. starts the day, which includes family fun, a concert by the Air Force Heritage of America “Blue Aces” Ensemble from Langley Air Force Base at 7 p.m., and fireworks at 9:15 p.m. Free. 757-637-7778, www. fmauthority.com.

Newport News Fourth of July Stars in the Sky. Victory Landing Park, 50 23rd St., at the James River. Starts at 7 p.m. with kids rides and activities, music by the Tomcats Dixieland Band and Tidewater Drive Band and food vendors. Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Free. 757-926-1400, www.nnparks.com.

Norfolk 36th annual Fourth of July Great American Picnic and Fireworks, Town Point Park. Food vendors; entertainment includes the United States Fleet Forces Band. Event starts at 5 p.m.; fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Free. www. festevents.org.

Portsmouth Patriotic Salute and Bike Parade. The bike parade, for all ages, at 9:30 a.m. will be led by a fire engine down Afton Parkway to the Gazebo in Afton Square. (Register between 8:30 and 9:15 at George Washington Highway and Afton Parkway green space.) Prizes will be awarded for decorated bikes. At 10 a.m. a flag-raising ceremony will include patriotic addresses, music by a military band and refreshments by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 993 and Disabled American Veterans Post 41. Stars & Stripes 4th of July Concert. At the High Street Landing, country singer Celeste Kellogg will take the stage at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Tidewater Concert Orchestra at 7:30 p.m.

Suffolk Stars and Stripes Spectacular. Constant’s Wharf Park & Marina, 110 E. Constance Road. The fireworks begin at 9 p.m., following an evening of family fun and music that starts at 5:30 p.m. Free, except for vendors and a children’s area for ages 12 and younger, which is $5. Free shuttles will run from the First Baptist Church, Godwin Courts and City Hall parking lots beginning at 5:15 p.m. 757-514-7267, www.suffolk-fun.com.

Virginia Beach July Fourth Celebration. Mount Trashmore Park, 310 Edwin Drive. Live entertainment, children’s activities. Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Food vendors on site. Note: Limited on-site parking, $10. Edwin Drive between Independence Boulevard and South Boulevard may close. Expect delays. 4 to 10 p.m. Free event. www.vbgov.com.

Stars & Stripes Explosion. Free music at the Oceanfront at the 17th Street (7 p.m.), 24th Street (7:30 p.m.) and 31st Street (7 p.m.) stages. Fireworks at 9:30. Free. www.beachstreetusa.com.

Williamsburg Busch Gardens. 1 Busch Gardens Blvd. Regular admission. Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. 757-229-4386, buschgardens.com/williamsburg/events.

Colonial Williamsburg. Free outdoor festivities include a reading of the Declaration of Independence at 9:30 a.m.; a military muster celebrating the original 13 Colonies at 10 a.m.; a group reading of the Declaration of Independence at noon; fife and drum performances; and the “Lights of Freedom: A Fourth of July Procession and Fireworks” at 9 p.m. Many activities require regular admission. Premium seating on the Palace Green is being sold for the fireworks, but they can be viewed from the area for free, as well as from Market Square and the lawn of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. www.colonial williamsburg.com.

 

Yorktown Liberty Celebration at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Activities all day will include music, interpretive programs, military drills and artillery demonstrations. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. $1 5 for adults, $7.50 for ages 6-12, and free for children under age 6. www.history isfun.org/yorktown-victory-center/liberty-celebration.

Festivities in the city begin with an 8K run and 5K walk at 8 a.m., a parade at 9 , a bell-ringing ceremony at 7 p.m., a swing concert at 8 p.m. and fireworks around 9 p.m. www.yorkcounty.gov.

Chesapeake Wine Festival

A number of events have been rescheduled or cancelled in preparation for Hurricane Matthew.  One event that is still on is the Chesapeake Wine Festival, hosted by the Chesapeake Rotary Club.

This is a great event that benefits local charities and over the past 6 years the Chesapeake Rotary Club has given away over $1,000,000 to local charities.  If you are looking for a great event this weekend the Chesapeake Wine Festival is a great way to spend the day.

Hurricane Matthew

Current weather reports indicate that Hurricane Matthew will not effect the Hampton Roads area. However, we will continue to monitor weather updates as the storm progresses and make adjustments as required.

We keep our friends to the South in our thoughts and prays as they deal with the effects of Hurricane Matthew over the next couple of days.

Valentine’s Day is coming.
